Why do you live in New Mexico? Why do you live in New Mexico? Why do you live in New Mexico? Why do you live in New Mexico?

Artists flock to northern New Mexico for the clarity of the light and the beautiful, awe-inspiring scenery of the high desert. Lost Saints studio sits on a hilltop in the Pecos River Valley in the tiny Spanish Colonial vilage of Villanueva.
Although Gene Mederos has lived and worked in New Mexico since 1996, and has long dreamed of opening a studio, the dream became a reality just this year. Two rooms of the hundred year old adobe house he calls home have been converted into a studio housing finished works and many works in progress, including sculptures and carvings created to decorate the house and grounds.

So who, or what, are lost saints?

Most of the subjects of Gene's work are mythological and symbolic. Born in Cuba and raised in the Latin American diaspora of Brooklyn and Miami, Gene was exposed to the practice of Santeria, where a pantheon of African gods are secretly worshipped in the guise of Catholic saints. In his studies, Gene learned that a great many of the pagan gods and goddesses of ancient religions and myth were still being worshipped in today's religions and popular culture under new guises.
However, many ancient deities, particurlarly those of fertlity, joy, dance, celebration and magic, didn't make the transition to sainthood. These lost saints are some of his favorite subjects. See how many of these old gods you can find among his work.
Lost Saints Studio is owned and operated by Gene Mederos and Scott Stark.
